Natural and sexual selection One of the first and central mechanisms proposed by Darwin during his life was that of natural selection. Some may refer to this as survival of the fittest, whereby species that produce offspring have been successful in doing so because they have produced random individual features which have lead them to live longer and pro-create offspring with the same inheritable desired features. Not all individuals will be able to reproduce, therefore only the fittest willÂ…multiply, vary, let the strongest live and the weakest die, (Darwin, Charles (1968, 1859)) Origin of the Species. Darwin (1871) wrote that humans might have been prepared for language by sexual selection reinforcing the most expressive, articulate non-verbal vocalists in so doing creating a song making ability in humans that could later be interpreted into language. So sexual and natural selection may have not just been about physical attractiveness 500,000 years ago, but rather, sexual attractiveness which was more focused on physical abilities and unique qualities. This idea of natural and sexual selection has paved a way over the years into todays society, where our choice of partner is still influenced primarily on sexual, physical and mental attributes, however, it has been a made a little more accessible and easier for us at present thanks to our homo sapien ancestors.
